China reports more chemical accidents in H1

BEIJING — China reported 113 chemical accidents in the first half of this year, the State Administration of Work Safety (SAWS) said on Aug 1.

The figure represents a rise of 7.6 percent from the same period a year ago. They have led to 135 deaths, up 25 percent, the SAWS said in a statement.

The statement quoted an unnamed SAWS official as saying the chemical work safety situation remains grim and safety checks need to be overhauled.

The official urged chemical firms to strengthen safety awareness and be mindful of their legal responsibilities.
